Environmental Help for Businesses That Want Clear Answers
If you’re on this page, you’re probably trying to figure out whether you need environmental help, what kind of help that might be, or whether working with a consultant even makes sense for your business.
At RMA, environmental consulting simply means helping businesses with environmental needs, whether that’s one specific task, a few related items, or improving how environmental responsibilities are handled overall. Wherever you’re starting, this page will help you understand what that support can look like and whether it’s useful for you.
Most businesses don’t set out to become experts in environmental requirements, and they don’t need to. Whether it’s permits, plans, reports, training, or inspections, environmental obligations tend to show up quietly and get complicated fast. Our role is to help you understand what applies to your business and take care of what needs to be done, without unnecessary stress or guesswork.
We work with companies of all sizes and across a wide range of industries. Some clients come to us with a very specific need, like getting a permit or preparing a required document. Others aren’t sure what they need at all and just want to hand it off to someone else. Sometimes, once we start looking, it turns out there are multiple related requirements in play, and it makes sense to address them together.
We can help with one-off tasks, bundled compliance needs, or strengthening how your environmental program runs overall, including efficiency, consistency, and sustainability goals. However involved you want us to be, our focus stays the same: explain what’s required, get the work done right, and help you feel confident moving forward.

The Short Version: We talk. We start with a normal, no-pressure conversation to see whether we’re a good fit for each other.
The first step is simply reaching out. That might be through a form on our site, an email, or a phone call. However you contact us, a real person will respond. You won’t be automatically enrolled in a bunch of marketing emails, and you won’t be dropped into a sales funnel.
This first contact is completely free. We don’t charge for it, and it’s not a consultation you’re being billed for. It’s just a chance for us to talk through what you’re dealing with and figure out whether it’s something we can actually help with.
People reach out to us at very different stages, and all of them are normal. Some genuinely have no idea what they need or even whether they need anything at all. Others have a hunch they might need a permit, plan, approval, or some other environmental requirement handled. Others believe they’re generally covered, but want a better, more efficient, or more sustainable way to manage their environmental program.
We’re not in the business of wasting your time or ours. You explain what’s going on, what’s changed, or what’s been on your mind, and we’ll talk it through. If we’re a good fit, we’ll explain what help could look like. If we’re not, we’ll tell you that too.
You don’t need to prepare, and you don’t need to know the right terminology. We’re normal people who do this work every day, not high-pressure sales reps. The goal of the first contact is simply to make things feel less confusing and help both sides decide what, if anything, makes sense to do next.
The Short Version: If it looks like we’re a good fit, we formalize the work and get set up to do it right.
After that first conversation, if it sounds like working together makes sense, the next step is getting things formalized. We’ll put together a clear scope of work, a timeline, and a final price for whatever needs to be done. Nothing vague, nothing open-ended. Once you review and sign off, we’re officially on your team.
This is also the stage where we get set up to do the real work. If we’ve already determined that a site visit is needed, we’ll coordinate that with your team and schedule it at a time that works for you. Site visits are typically straightforward and focused. We come prepared, gather what we need efficiently, and respect that you’re running a business while we’re there.
Depending on your situation, this step might also include an environmental audit, a focused assessment, an online or document-based review, or a regulatory review done either remotely or in person. The goal is to make sure we fully understand what applies to your operation and what work needs to happen next.
If you’re looking for help beyond a one-time task, this is also when we start getting familiar with your company and your existing environmental program. We’ll review permits, plans, records, and whatever else you already have in place so we understand what’s working, what’s outdated, and what might need attention.
This stage is about setting both sides up for success. By the time we move into the actual work, there’s a shared understanding of scope, expectations, and timelines, and no surprises about what’s being done or why.
The Short Version: We do the work that needs to be done and deliver what was agreed to.
Once everything is set up and we’re aligned on scope, timeline, and pricing, this is where the actual work happens. What that looks like depends entirely on what you hired us to do. For some clients, it’s a single, well-defined task. For others, it’s a handful of related items or a broader effort to strengthen their environmental program.
This might include preparing permits, plans, reports, or other required documentation, conducting site work, addressing findings from an assessment or audit, or helping implement changes that were identified earlier. We focus on doing the work thoroughly and correctly, without creating unnecessary complexity.
Throughout this stage, we keep things straightforward. You’ll know what we’re working on, where things stand, and what’s coming next. We’re available to answer questions, explain what we’re doing in plain language, and make sure the end result actually makes sense for how your business operates.
For many clients, this is the end of the engagement. The work gets done, the deliverables are provided, and you move on with confidence knowing it was handled the right way. For others, this step is part of a larger effort, but the focus remains the same: get the work done well and deliver exactly what was agreed to.
The Short Version: If you want continued support, we’re here. If you don’t, that’s completely fine.
Once the agreed-upon work is complete, some clients are done, and that’s the end of the engagement. They got what they needed, it was handled correctly, and they move on. That’s a very common outcome, and we’re perfectly comfortable with it.
Other clients decide they want ongoing support after that initial work is finished. That might be because their operations change, requirements evolve, or they want help keeping things organized and running smoothly over time. In those cases, we can stay involved at a level that makes sense for you.
Ongoing support can look very different depending on your needs. It might be occasional check-ins, updates, or reviews. It might be help managing or improving an environmental program, supporting sustainability or EHS goals, or acting as an extension of your internal team. It can be light-touch or more hands-on.
There’s no default long-term commitment and no one-size-fits-all model. You decide how involved you want us to be, and that can change over time. Our role is simply to support you in a way that’s actually useful, not to lock you into something you don’t need.
Clear help, defined scope, and support that fits what you actually need.
Some businesses come to us knowing exactly what they need. Others have no idea whether they need anything at all. We help you sort that out and decide what, if anything, makes sense to move forward with.
When things aren’t clear, a closer look is often the best next step. This can be a focused review, a broader assessment, or a document-based or on-site audit, depending on your situation and comfort level.
If there’s something specific that needs to be done, we handle it. That might be a permit, plan, report, or other required deliverable. For many clients, this is a defined, one-time project, and that’s the end of it.
Some clients aren’t fixing a problem. They’re trying to run a better program. We help improve structure, consistency, and effectiveness, including support for EMS, sustainability initiatives, and broader EHS goals.
Sometimes one requirement leads to another. If it turns out you need more than one service, or support across multiple locations, we can usually handle everything in one place instead of sending you to multiple consultants.
Some clients are done once the initial work is complete. Others want continued help as things change or grow. We support both. The level of involvement is always up to you.
Our environmental consulting services are built for companies that want clarity, real help, and a practical way to manage environmental responsibilities. We’re a great fit for you if:
✓ You’re not sure what environmental requirements apply to your business and want clear, honest answers before moving forward.
✓ You have a hunch you need a permit, plan, approval, or report and want someone to confirm it and handle it the right way.
✓ You believe you have your required boxes checked, but want a more organized, efficient, or sustainable environmental program.
✓ You already have permits, plans, or procedures in place, but want a second set of eyes to make sure everything still makes sense.
✓ You’ve had an inspection, audit, notice, or close call and want help responding and preventing repeat issues.
✓ You manage more than one facility and want a consistent, streamlined approach across all locations.
✓ You want an environmental program your team can actually follow, not something that lives in a binder or on one person’s computer.
We work with businesses across the country, from single-site operations that need targeted help, to multi-location organizations looking to strengthen and mature their environmental programs over time.
If environmental responsibilities feel unclear, fragmented, or harder than they should be, there’s a good chance we can help.
What does environmental consulting actually mean?
At its core, environmental consulting just means helping businesses with environmental needs. That help might be a permit, a plan, a report, an approval, a violation, or simply figuring out what applies to you. It does not automatically mean long-term contracts or handing your entire operation over to a consultant. Sometimes it is one small task. Sometimes it is a few related things. Sometimes it is about making an existing program work better.
I have no idea what I need. Can you still help?
Yes. A lot of people come to us with no idea what applies to their business. That's completely normal. You don't need to know the right terms, the right agencies, or the right rules. Our job is to listen, ask a few questions, and help you figure out what matters and what does not.
Is environmental consulting only for companies that are already in trouble?
No. Most of our clients are not in trouble at all, and we help them keep it that way. Some just want peace of mind. Others have a hunch that something might apply to them. Others want a second set of eyes on a program that feels messy or inefficient. Getting help early is usually simpler, cheaper, and less stressful than waiting for a problem.
What kinds of environmental help do you actually provide?
We help with things like permits, plans, reports, reviews, audits, training, and program improvements. That can be a one-time deliverable, a short project with a clear end, or optional ongoing support if you want it. We focus on practical help that fits how your business actually operates.
Do I need to understand environmental regulations before reaching out?
Is this going to turn into a sales pitch?
No. The first conversation is about fit, not selling. It is free, low pressure, and handled by a real person. If we can help, we will explain how. If we cannot, we will tell you that too. We are not interested in wasting your time or ours.
Do you take over our entire environmental program?
Only if you want us to. Many projects are one-and-done. We complete the agreed work, deliver it, and step away. Ongoing support is always optional and controlled by you. Some clients want long-term help, others just want a specific task handled correctly.
Can you help if we already have something in place?
Yes. Many clients come to us with existing permits, plans, or programs. Sometimes they just need an update. Sometimes they want a review or cleanup. Sometimes they want to make things more consistent across locations. Starting with something is almost always easier than starting from scratch.
How does the process usually work?
It starts with a conversation. If it looks like a good fit, we define a clear scope, timeline, and price. Once agreed, we gather information, do any needed site work or reviews, and then complete the work that was outlined. Many projects end there. Ongoing support is available if you want it.
Do you have to come to our site?
Not always. Some work can be done remotely with photos, documents, and calls. If a site visit is needed, we will explain why and schedule it around your operation. We try to be efficient and respectful of your time.
Is environmental consulting expensive?
How much does environmental consulting cost?
It depends on the scope. Some projects are relatively small and affordable. Others are larger and more complex. After an initial conversation, we provide a clear price before any work starts. No surprise fees and no open-ended billing.
Is environmental consulting only about compliance?
Compliance is part of it, but not the whole picture. We also help businesses simplify processes, reduce headaches, improve consistency, and build programs that are easier to manage long-term. Sometimes the goal is just making things work better.
Can you help with sustainability or environmental programs?
Yes. Some clients want help strengthening environmental management systems, improving efficiency, or setting realistic sustainability goals. We focus on practical improvements, not buzzwords or virtue signaling.
What if we have multiple locations?
We work with both single-site and multi-location businesses. If you have multiple locations, we can help standardize things so you are not managing a patchwork of different documents and approaches.
Is environmental consulting only for big factories or industrial sites?
No. Environmental help is not just for massive plants or heavy industry. Small businesses, warehouses, offices, commercial buildings, and service companies all run into environmental questions. If your business interacts with fuel, chemicals, waste, water, air, or land in any way, environmental rules can apply.
If nothing bad has happened yet, do I really need help?
Maybe, maybe not. Getting help does not mean something is wrong. Many businesses just want confirmation that they are okay, or advice on whether they need to do anything at all. Sometimes the answer is no action needed, and that peace of mind is worth a lot.
Is environmental consulting mostly paperwork?
A lot of it does involve paperwork, but the goal is not paperwork for paperwork's sake. The documents exist to explain what you do, show that you are following the rules, and make things clear during inspections or audits. Good environmental help should make life easier, not harder.
Will working with a consultant slow down my operations?
It should not. Our goal is to work around your operation, not disrupt it. Most projects are designed to fit into your schedule and minimize interruptions. When site visits are needed, they are planned to be efficient and respectful of your team.
Do environmental problems always lead to fines or penalties?
No. Many environmental issues are handled through fixes, updates, or better documentation. Fines usually come from ignoring issues for a long time or failing to respond. Early help often prevents small issues from turning into expensive ones.
Can environmental requirements change even if my business stays the same?
Yes. Rules change over time, and so do interpretations. Even if your operation has not changed, older permits or plans may need updates. This is a common reason businesses reach out, just to make sure they are still aligned.
What if our staff already handles environmental tasks?
Are environmental consultants inspectors or regulators?
No. Consultants do not enforce rules or issue penalties. We work for you, not the government. Our role is to help you understand expectations and meet them in a practical way.
What if I'm worried about uncovering problems?
That concern is very common. Most issues are manageable once identified. Knowing where you stand is usually better than guessing. We focus on solutions, not blame.
What if you can't help us?
We will tell you. If your need is outside our scope or not something you actually need help with, we will be honest about that. Sometimes the right answer is that you are already in good shape, or that someone else would be better suited to help you out.
What is the best next step if I am unsure?
Start with a conversation. You can call, email, or fill out a form on our website. A real person will respond, listen to where you are at, and help you decide what makes sense. You do not need to prepare or know the right questions ahead of time.

I have known RMA (and Doug Ruhlin) for over 12 years, working closely with him at NRMCA. He has always been a great spokesman and friend of our industry. Through the association, he works tirelessly to provide excellent programs and tools for our industry. His desire to see our industry move forward and grow has been an integral part of driving the Operations, Environment & Safety Committee within NRMCA. Recently we contracted with RMA on a time-sensitive project, they were able to meet our needs with quality service. Their knowledge of our industry and quick feel for our company made for a very smooth project. RMA understands the challenges our industry faces and helps provide effective solutions. Resource Management Associates is a key influence to our environmental program. We operate several ready-mix concrete plants in 3 states, which all have unique regulations to deal with. They've assisted in everything from seeking approvals from local townships, preparing SWPPPs, environmental training for employees, and establishing environmental best practices at our concrete plants. RMA has done an excellent job of maintaining compliance with new environmental laws and regulations. By working with RMA we have been proactive and are one step ahead of any visits from environmental agencies.

I first met Doug of RMA in 2002 when I attended an environmental course he developed for the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. Doug’s ability to effectively communicate and explain the voluminous environmental regulations pertaining to the concrete industry is remarkable. He is truly a gifted speaker and teacher. If you are new to the industry or the environmental field, I strongly recommend participating in Doug’s courses. Since then, we’ve worked together on several projects including an NPDES permitting, and most recently, further development of the Green-Star EMS Program at NRMCA. Doug’s passion, experience, and insight are always welcomed assets on any environmental project.

I’ve known Doug of RMA for over 4 years and have seen him tirelessly and passionately promote best management practices to the industries and good stewardship of the environment while exhibiting a refreshingly honest and compassionate concern for the business. It does not take long for one to see and feel Doug’s enthusiasm and commitment when talking to him or hearing him educate a group on the subject of environmental compliance. He manages to do this while helping the end user accomplish this sometimes incompressible task economically. Having hired RMA to assist with decoding the mass of sometimes confusing and contradicting US EPA and state DEP regulations, I can say with confidence that they know our industry very well. I heartily recommend RMA and Doug Ruhlin for anyone needing professional and ethical council with environmental compliance.

Doug Ruhlin has significantly helped bring sustainability to the concrete industry. The first work we did together was on the NPCA Sustainability Committee. His impact was immediate and positive. Doug brings a holistic view of sustainability. I would ask Doug to explain a concept to the committee and he would arrive prepared and armed with a PowerPoint presentation. He is great communicator and possesses a wealth of knowledge on sustainability and environmental affairs. I hope to continue working with Doug for many years as we continue our good work with the committee.

I have known Doug Ruhlin of RMA for nearly 20 years. RMA has been a leader in the environmental arena for all of that time. They're intimately versed in the key environmental issues that affect aggregates and concrete producers; they know the laws, regulations and both industries thoroughly. RMA has helped steer the formulation of new regulations and they have helped to direct industry's response to the current and new regulations - in multiple states. I would not acquire an existing operation or start a greenfield plant or quarry without consulting Doug.
