What is a New Jersey recycling approval?

In New Jersey, a lot of recycling activities are treated like regulated solid waste work. A “recycling approval” is the permission you need from NJDEP (and often the county and town) to legally receive, store, transfer, or process certain recyclable materials. If you are handling recyclables as part of your business, there is a good chance you need some level of approval.

Do I need a recycling approval if we are just storing materials, not processing them?

Often, yes. In NJ, simply receiving and storing recyclable material can still be regulated depending on what the material is, how much you have, and what you are doing with it. If your operation looks like a transfer or staging yard, NJDEP will likely still expect an approval even if you are not “processing.”

We are not a recycling company. We just handle scrap, pallets, or returns. Does this apply to us?

It can. A lot of businesses land in this world by accident. Warehouses, manufacturers, contractors, and logistics sites often handle recyclable materials without thinking of it as “recycling.” If you are collecting materials on site and shipping them out, it is worth checking what NJDEP considers your activity.

What materials trigger approvals in New Jersey?

It depends on the material type and how it is handled. NJDEP groups recyclable materials into classes (often called Class A, B, C, and D). The class affects what approvals are needed and what conditions you will have to meet. We help you identify the right material class so you do not pick the wrong path.

What are Class A, B, C, and D recyclables in plain English?

Think of these as buckets that NJDEP uses to group different recyclable materials. Some are more common and lower concern, others have more risk or more rules attached. What approval types exist, and which one do I need?

How much do NJ recycling approvals cost?

What information do you need from us to get started?

Do we need a specific property or zoning to get approved?
